Battle of the Brews Delivers Big Flavors and Bigger Impact in Sonoma County

Battle of the Brews 2025

Every year, one of Northern California’s most anticipated food and drink festivals returns to the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Battle of the Brews, hosted by the Active 20 30 Club of Santa Rosa, brings together craft beer, local cider, a full barbecue competition, live music, and a crowd that shows up for more than just the fun. Every ticket sold helps raise money for children’s charities right here in Sonoma County.

Behind the Scenes as a BBQ Judge

This year, I had the honor of being one of the barbecue judges. Sitting beside certified KCBS judges and seasoned pros, I quickly realized I was in good hands. The judging was blind, the standards were high, and the food was on a different level. I learned a lot just by listening and watching how the others approached each plate. I walked away with a deeper respect for the craft and a real appreciation for the chance to be part of it.

The Chicken That Stole the Show

Out of all the entries, the chicken stood out. I am not even a big fan of chicken, but this one changed that. It was juicy, full of flavor, and cooked just right. After the judging, I found out it came from Aces Over Eights BBQ.

They were also my favorite chicken entry last year, but somehow this year it was even better. This might be the best barbecue chicken I have ever had. The seasoning was balanced, the smoke was right where it needed to be, and the texture was perfect. Every bite tasted better than the one before.

As judging wrapped up, the event opened to the public and the party started fast. Grace Pavilion was packed with people. Lines for beer. Barbecue being cooked and served outside. I ran into so many familiar faces. Shoutout to everyone who stopped me to say hello, it always means a lot.

The Mystery Green Sauce

While judging ribs, one entry had a bright green sauce that completely stood out. It was sweet, tangy, and unlike anything else on the table. I could not stop thinking about it.

After the competition, I found the team behind it. 2 Fatt Jacks BBQ. They told me the sauce was originally made by one of their mothers. She had tried making pepper jelly, but it did not set. What came out of that batch was this green sauce. It was so good they kept making it, and now it is part of their signature flavor. They have been competing in barbecue since 2004, and their experience comes through in every bite.

The Pork Belly Sendoff

Just before heading out, the team from Aces Over Eights BBQ stopped me and insisted I try their pork belly. I am glad I did. It was rich, tender, and full of flavor. It was the kind of bite that reminds you why this event stands out year after year.
